McCloud River Fishing Report

The McCloud River continues to give up some great fishing. The river is in fantastic shape with showery weather mixing in with sunny days. The wild Azaleas are in full bloom and their fragrance makes you wonder if you are in a perfume shop. Bring your raincoat for those unexpected thunderstorms and bring your game face, the McCloud River has been giving up some beautiful fish. The Golden Stones are out and about and we have been having good luck with a big Stimulator or Chubby Chernobyl with your favorite dropper hanging off of them. Think stealth too, the clarity of the water is a good 4-5 ft. so skinny up on that tippet. It's that time of year and folks are coming out of the wood works to enjoy this gorgeous river thus we entitle it The McCrowd..... Ah Di Nah Campground was full up yesterday with more sports rolling in.

Give us a shout here at Wild Waters Fly Fishing, we would love to help you enjoy this fabled river.

Cheers

Upper Sacramento River Fishing Report

The Upper Sacramento River is and has been a terrific option for fishing this Spring.  It is starting to sound like a broken record .... good to excellent. Flows remain at a healthy 400-500 cfs with many choices for you to play. The top end from Dunsmuir up river is still seeing a good number of Salmonflies and from mid river (Sims) upstream the Goldens are popping out. The lower river is all about Caddis, Caddis and more Caddis. Cool showery days are producing excellent hatches around midday. Nymphing remains very solid so think about Birds Nest, Poopahs, LBS and soft hackles. This is river is a great option during these busy holiday weekends, you have about 35 miles of accessible water to pick and choose from.

Cheers

McCloud and Upper Sacramento Rivers Heating Up

Great start to the trout season so far here in Dogpatch. Both of our fabled rivers are fishing good and well worth a trip. Waters conditions are excellent to perfect. Currently nymphers will get most of the fish. The hatches are beginning thus the gulpers and sippers will start showing their heads very soon .... if not NOW. Both rivers are seeing Salmonflies still with a few early Golden Stones out and about with many more to come over the next month. Caddis, Mayflies and Yellow Sallies are becoming more prominent as each day passes. Don't get too scientific here you dry fly officiants, think old school .... size, shape and color. With the water temps rising we are seeing a mix of the big and little fish which is common, those little ones have got to grow up like their big brothers and sisters. Expect to see the McCloud crowds on the weekends, Ah Di Nah has been filling up along with Ash Camp but that's why we call it the McCrowd this time of year. The Upper Sac isn't seeing as much pressure but understandably, this river has 30 plus miles of access as opposed to the McClouds 6 miles. It's a bit early for them but I have been discovering that the LBS (Little Black Shit) flies are working very good as shown below. My recommendation, drop everything and get up here, Spring has sprung and I have some great Wild Waters Fly Fishing guides who can help you have a ball.

Cheers

Upper Sacramento River

The river is in fantastic shape, the best we have seen it in a number of years. Recent trips and reports are indicating good to very good fishing. We are seeing some very nice fish bending rods from Ney Springs down to Delta. Flows and conditions will spoil you, it's been quite some time since we have seen this great river in such excellent shape for early season. May should be outstanding, as the warmer weather settles into the canyon the hatches will continue to increase and as we all know around here May and June are the best dry fly fishing with multiple hatches of Golden Stones and a variety of Mayflies and Caddis. Get on up here, enjoy the fun and give us a call.

McCLOUD RIVER

The McCloud River like the Upper Sacramento is in excellent shape and should remain so due to the lack of a big snowpack. A recon trip was made recently down to Ah Di Nah and I am happy to report the road is open. Beware though there are a few narrow but passable slides....as usual though the road sucks and the crawl is still there. The campground is fine, looked great but the water had not been turned on yet thus no toilets. Check with the McCloud Ranger Station for the latest on the camp water. Fishing here too should be stellar for you early birds.
