Ted Fay Report : June 1, 2024
Rick Cox
Well the weather in Dogpatch is starting to get warm, finally. Temps next week will get into the 90’s so that should help the melt wring out the snow in the mountains. The McCloud River is looking very good currently and the caretaker at the Preserve said there aren’t many folks fishing it after the Memorial Day weekend. But that will all change shortly when the hatches ramp up. Presently the clarity and flows are perfect however the snowmelt may affect it next week. As mentioned previously in my last report the hatches have started and they should be in full swing next week. The USac is running and bouncing around 1k and reports from the savvy anglers are catching fish. Again the hot weather next week will accelerate the melt and then it will settle down and be ready for yuz guys and gals. The river hasn’t seen many anglers this winter so the fish should be hungry. With things improving it’s time to plan a trip or two or three up here before the dog daze set in. I heard a report from the shop that big bushy attractors are catching fish in the upper stretches above Dunsmuir and another report said the lower river is putting fish out likewise. The game in the lower river is NYMPHS.
Buster and I fished the Rogue River earlier this week for the Salmonfly hatch and it didn’t disappoint. Cutthroat and half pounders were looking up and we pretty much had nonstop action. This will happen for a couple more weeks so I recommend you get up there.
Cheers
